titleOfInvention Synthesis of 2-substituted phenothiazines
abstract 1,213,474. 2-Substituted phenothiazines. E.R. SQUIBB & SONS Inc. 27 Nov., 1967 [1 Dec., 1966], No. 5392/67. Heading C2C. Compounds of the formula where R is halo, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, halo (lower alkyl), lower alkyl mercapto halo (lower alkyl mercapto), halo (lower alkoxy), (lower alkyl) sulphonyl, amidosulphonyl, lower alkanoyl, cyano and isocyano, are made by cyclizing by heating compounds of the formula where Y is acyl in an aprotic solvent selected from N,N-di-lower alkyl) (lower alkanoic acid) amides, di-(lower alkyl) sulphoxides, di-(lower alkyl) sulphones, (lower alkylene) sulphones and (lower alkenylene) sulphones and, if necessary, treating the intermediate formed to produce the required 2-substituted phenothiazine. The word "lower" is defined as having from one to eight carbon atoms.
