titleOfInvention Separation of volatile constituents from polymer compositions
abstract 1,213,467. Polymer compositions, removal of volatile constituents. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 27 Dec., 1967 [28 Dec., 1966], No. 58698/67. Heading B1B. Voltatile constituents, e.g. monomer or other solvent, are removed from a polymer composition by heating the composition to boiling temperature and introducing the foaming mass through inlet 26 into the side of a barrel 12 within which is rotating a helical screw 10. Flash vaporization of the volatile constituents occurs in the barrel, and the vapours leave through vent 28, which may be connected to a condenser and vacuum pump. The polymer composition is compressed in the tapered section 22 of the barrel, where further separation of volatile constituents takes place; and the solvent-free polymer is discharged through section 24 and port 30. The polymer composition to be devolatilized may be passed through a flash chamber before it is introduced into the screw extruder. The barrel and screw may be made of stainless steel. An apparatus comprising two screws, mounted in a single barrel, is described. An example relates to the separation of styrene from polystyrene. The treatment of polyethylene, polypropylene, and vinyl polymers is also referred to.
