[Also in Division B3] A press comprises two yokes 1 and at least two spacers 3 having curved outer surfaces to provide a frame, around which is wound a sheath of pre-stressed wire or strip material 10 to absorb the forces. Pressure medium is introduced through channels 21 in a holder 18 or in the upper yoke 1 above an elastomeric pad 20 which presses a sheet metal workpiece against a forming block positioned on a movable carriage 17. The spacers 3 are longer than the distance between the yokes 1 and may be wedge shaped to form a press having an oval cross-section (Fig. 3, not shown). The steel sheath 10 is wound under tension between flanges (11, 14) on the yokes and spacers. A number of press units may be joined together to form a longer operating space.
