titleOfInvention Improved bonding of thermoplastic-faced thermosetting laminates
abstract 1,210,268. Laminates. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 20 March, 1968 [21 March, 1967], No. 13572/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Division G2] A method of making a laminate comprises placing together (1) a layer of a thermosetting mixture of (a) an ethylenically unsaturated polyester; and (b) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerizable therewith and (2) at least one layer of a thermoplastic material comprising polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride or chlorinated polyethylene or mixtures thereof or a copolymer including a major proportion of polymerized vinyl chloride, polymerized and chlorinated vinyl chloride or polymerized and chlorinated ethylene in the presence of, as bonding agent, an ethylenically unsaturated compound is an amount of 0À1 to 20% by weight based on the weight of the thermoplastic material either in the thermoplastic material or at the bonding surface of the thermoplastic material, and subjecting the assembly to curing conditions which cause the thermosetting layer to cross-link and the thermoplastic to bond to the thermosetting layer. Specified monomers are styrene, α- methyl styrene, o- or p-vinyl toluene, divinyl benzene, diallyl phthalate, triallyl cyanurate, methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, ethyl hexyl acrylate, acrylonitrile and acrylamide. Specified bonding agents which may be incorporated homogeneously or into the bonding surface only of the thermoplastic layer or which may (when polymeric) be in the form of a film are butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber, polybutadiene, diallyl phthalate, allyl propionate, allyl benzoate, allyl isocumyl ether, vinyl glycolic acid, vinyl acetonitrile and fumaric acid. Crosslinking may be effected by the application of heat and optionally pressure. In a preferred embodiment, a thermosetting layer consisting of an impregnated glass fibre mat is bonded between two sheets of thermoplastic material.
