[Also in Division C5] Novel haloalkyl propynyl ethers of general Formula (I) wherein each R is a hydrogen atom, a cycloalkyl group having 3 to 6 carbon atoms or an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, X and Y are each a halogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms or a perfluoroalkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and Z is a hydrogen, chlorine, bromine or iodine atom, under the proviso that X and Y may both be fluorine atoms only when Z is not a hydrogen atom are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula with a propynyl alcohol of the formula in the presence of a base, and subsequent bromination or chlorination, if required, to form a haloalkyl halopropynyl ether. The compounds of the invention are used to stabilize haloalkane solvents in the presence of aluminium. Solvents specified are chloroform, bromoform, iodoform, methylchloroform, ethyl chloroform, methylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride, ethylene dichloride, ethylene dibromide, 1,1 - dichloro - 1,2 - dibromo - ethane, 1,1,2 - trichloro - 1,2 - dibromoethane, 1,2 - dibromo - 3 - chloro - propane, 1,1,1 - trichloro - 3 - bromo - propane, 1 - chloro - 2 - bromo - ethane, 1,1 - dichloroethane, 1,2 - dichloropropane and 1,1,1 - trichloro - 3 - bromo - propane.
