titleOfInvention Resin compositions
abstract 1,205,682. Resin-bonded metal laminates. CELANESE COATINGS CO. 18 Sept., 1968 [22 Sept., 1967], No. 44317/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] Laminates, e.g. of metal sheets, are manufactured using a room temperature curable composition consisting of: (A) a solution of an unsaturated polyester resin in a polymerizable monomer containing at least one terminal ethylenically unsaturated group; the solution contains 20-70% of its weight of the monomer and 0À1 to 5% of its weight of a free radical producing catalyst; and (B) an epoxy resin composition containing 0À75 to 1À5 amine equivalents of an aromatic polyamine having at least two amino nitrogen atoms attached to an aromatic nucleus and more than two amino hydrogen atoms and from 2 to 25% by weight of the resin of an organic carboxylic acid catalyst having an aliphatic or phenolic hydroxy group or a mercapto group on a carbon atom in the 1, 2, 3 or 4 position from the COOH group e.g. salicylic acid. Laminates may be prepared by first coating two steel sheets with solution (A) and making a sandwich structure with composition (B) which is applied before (A) has gelled so that mixing takes place at the interface. In a preferred composition the polyester is prepared from fumaric acid and the dihydroxypropyl ether of bisphenol A, the polymerizable monomer is styrene; and (B) comprises the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, methylene dianiline and salicylic acid. The laminated structures may be cured at room temperature.
