titleOfInvention Process for growing yeast on petroleum hydrocarbons
abstract 1,204,646. Yeast. TEXACO BELGIUM N.V. S.A. July 7, 1969 [July 27, 1978], No.34116/69. Heading C6F. A yeast Candida guilliermondii or Candida rugosa is aerobically cultured on a liquid nutrient medium in the presence of a feedstock containing paraffinic petroleum hydrocarbons as a carbon source and the yeast produced is recovered. Such recovery may involve freezing the entire broth, centrifuging to remove growth medium and remaining oil, washing the separated yeast and then drying it to a moist cake or dry powder in a stream of warm air. The pH of the culturing medium is maintained between 4 and 6 by the addition of ammonium hydroxide or marble chips. Feedstock: specified paraffinic or asphaltic crude oils, preferably 325-650‹ F. fractions, liquefied petroleum wax or slack wax, keresene, gas oil, middle distillates, fuel oil or diesel oil, or mixtures of C8-C12, C14-C18 or C20-C32 normal paraffins. The Specification discloses procedures for testing the ability of Candida yeasts (and other micro-organisms) to assimilate hydrocarbon substrates.
