[Also in Division D1] Partially or completely hydrogenated thiophen-1,1-dioxide compounds especially of Formula A: in which m is 0-5, k is 0-3, p is 1-8, X and Y independently are oxygen or sulphur, R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1-6 alkylene radical which may be substituted by hydroxy, alkoxy or alkylmercapto group or halogen, R<SP>11</SP> is a hydrocarbon radical linked via a single or double bond and may be substituted by alkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy, amino, carbonyl or carbonamide group; a fused carbocycle or heterocycle; a halogen atom; a functional organic group linked via a single or double bond; an oxygen or sulphur atom, Z 1 is the radical of a polyfunctional compound in which one or more functional groups may be replaced with the grouping of Formula B4: are prepared by known processes, e.g. base catalysed addition of alcohols, mercaptans or amines on to thiophen or 2,5-dihydrothiophen- 1,1-dioxides or by addition of sodium hydrogen sulphide on to 2,5-dihydrothiophen-1,1-dioxide and subsequent alkylation or acylation of the resultant mercaptans or by reaction of 2,3- dichloro - tetrahydrothiophen - 1,1 - dioxide with 2 moles of alkali metal alcoholate or alkali metal mercaptide.
