titleOfInvention Metal casting sand compositions
abstract 1,203,743. Foundry sand composition. CENTRO SPERIMENTALE METALLURGICO S.p.A. 10 Jan., 1969 [12 Jan., 1968], No. 1715/69. Heading C3N. A metal casting sand composition comprises sand, an aluminous cement or a mixture of an aluminous cement and a cement compatible therewith, e.g. pozzuolana cement, a surface active agent, from 0.1-1% by weight, based on the weight of the aluminous cement or the cement mixture, of a setting accelerator for the cement, a water-soluble low molecular weight resin (mol. wt. 700-900) capable of hardening at room temperature, and, as a hardening agent for the resin, formaldehyde. Suitable resins specified are phenol-formaldehyde, resorcinolformaldehyde resins, the surface-active agent employed is ethyl benzene sulphonate, whilst the setting accelerator exemplified is lithium chloride. The sand may be in any known in the art, e.g. silica, chromite, olivine or zircon. The resin may be rendered alkaline in order to facilitate the setting of the cement by treating with a hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate of the alkali and alkaline-earth metals, e.g. lithium carbonate.
