A heat-softened foamable thermoplastic resin containing a blowing agent (which is a gas or liquid) under pressure and a nucleating agent comprising a salt of an aromatic carboxylic acid is extruded into a zone of lower pressure to allow foaming of the resin. The resin may be polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. The nucleating agent may be sodium or calcium benzoate, salicylate or phthalate optionally together with calcium acetate, silica, talc or a wax. The blowing agent may be butane or nitrogen. The extruder may be a screw extruder having a slit die.
