An infrared transmitting filter consists of an anti-reflecting coating of arsenic sulphide on a cadmium-antimony plate located before the receiver of an electro-optical sensing device, and filters out the shorter wavelengths, up to 2À4Á, of the sun's rays, the anti-reflection coating being applied to each surface of the plate and comprising AS 2 S I where x=1À5 to 5À5, and is of thickness 'd' given by the formula d= (2K-1)#o/4n 1 where K = 1, 2, 3 ..... n #o = Wavelength of desired maximum transmittance n = refractive index of the AS 2 S x coating. Preferably the AS 2 S x coating has a value of x lying from 4À5 to 5À5. Such a filter has a use in detecting hot-running axle-bearings which might also be exposed to the sun's rays.
