titleOfInvention Improvements relating to the oligomerisation of conjugated diolefins and catalysts therefor
abstract 1,201,818. Catalyst for oligomerization of dienes. COLUMBIAN CARBON CO. 4 Oct., 1967 [5 Oct., 1966 (2)], No. 45120/67. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C5] A catalyst composition is prepared under anhydrous conditions by admixing a nickel (II) or nickel (III) compound, carbon monoxide, a reducing agent (other than CO) capable of reducing the nickel valence to below 2, carbon monoxide and a molecular organic Lewis base. Useful reducing agents include hydrogen, the hydrazines, metals of Groups IA (e.g. Na), IIA (e.g. Be), IIB (e.g. Hg), IIIA (e.g. Ga), IVA (e.g. Pb), hydrides and organic compounds of said metals and of boron. Preferred reducing agents are represented by R a A1X b , where R is hydride or hydrocarbyl, X is halide or hydrocarboxy, a is 1-3, b is 0-2 and (a+b)=3, e.g. trialkylaluminiums. Lewis bases include aliphatic conjugated diolefins, e.g. 1,3-butadiene, and organic derivatives of Group VA elements, preferably those of N. Preferred Lewis bases are acylamido compounds of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen, hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl; R<SP>3</SP> is R<SP>1</SP> or hydroxy, hydrocarboxy, nitroso, amino, carbonyl or -COR<SP>3</SP>, and R<SP>3</SP> is hydrocarbyl, substituted hydrocarbyl, hydrocarboxy or amino and .. each represent heterocyclic radical having 5 to 6 inclusive ring members. N-methyl-2-pyrrolidine is preferred. Two Lewis bases may be used together. Preferred molar ratios of reducing agent, carbon monoxide and Lewis base to nickel compound are 0.1-50:1, 0.3-3.5:1, and at least 0.5:1 respectively. The catalysts so prepared are used in the oligomerization of conjugated dienes (see Division C5).
