titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of vinyl chloride polymers
abstract 1,201,570. Vinyl chloride polymerization. WACKER-CHEMIE G.m.b.H. 20 Dec., 1968 [20 Dec., 1967], No. 60768/68. Heading C3P. Polymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride are prepared by a precipitation polymerization reaction wherein the reaction medium is a saturated aliphatic compound of carbon and fluorine and optionally chlorine and/or hydrogen, at least one carbon atom being bonded to at least 3 halogen atoms. The medium preferably has a boiling point (at 760 mm. of Hg) below 120‹ C. (The Specification contains a list of suitable fluorine containing compounds for use as the reaction medium). In the examples: (1) vinyl chloride, (2) vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate and optionally maleic acid, (3) vinyl chloride and vinyl formate, and (4) vinyl chloride and ethylene are polymerized using conventional free radical forming catalysts, the reactions being carried out in tetrafluorodichloroethane, difluorodichloromethane, monofluorotrichloromethane or octafluorocyclobutane. The polymer may be used, in suitable solvents, as a coating or lacquer composition.
