titleOfInvention Foundry moulds and cores
abstract 1,201,395. Foundry moulds and cores. CONTEKI DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 20 Dec., 1968 [22 Dec., 1967], No. 58430/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C3] Foundry moulds or cores are made by locating within a closed container, the whole or part of which is to constitute the pattern for the mould or core, a composition comprising a finelydivided refractory material and a thermosettable or chemically hardenable, foamable resin composition and allowing or causing the composition to foam and become partially or fully set within the container. The resin composition may comprise a phenolformaldehyde, ureaformaldehyde, melamine formaldehyde, furan, alkyd or epoxy resin or a resin prepared by reacting an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate with an isocyanate or isothiocyanate. Suitable refractory materials are foundry sand, alumina, magnesia, chromite sand, chamotte, dolomite or a refractory silicate. The blowing agent may be azo bisisobutyrylnitrile, trichlorofluoromethane or other fluorohydrocarbon or may be generated in the resin forming reaction. It is preferred to coat the walls of the container in contact with the reaction mixture with an antifoaming agent. In the case where the resin is formed from the aqueous solution of alkali-metal silicate and isocyanate it is preferred to add a catalyst such as a tertiary amine or metal compound to the reaction mixture. In a specific example a mixture of fine sand, sodium silicate solution, diphenylmethane - 4,4<SP>1</SP> - diisocyanate, a mixture of dimethylaminoethanol and tetramethylene diamine trichlorofluoromethane and silicone foam stabilizer is poured into a closable moulding box, the pattern faces of which are coated with a silicone antifoaming agent, to form a product in which the surfaces contacting the walls of the container are formed as a rigid solid (virtually all sand) and the remainder, more remote from the walls is in the form of a foam of low density.
