titleOfInvention Optically sensitized photoconductive recording material
abstract 1,200,901. Photo-conductive composition. GEVAERT-AGFA N.V. 1 April, 1968 [26 April, 1967], No. 19188/67. Heading H1K. A photo-conductive recording material comprises a photo-conductor sensitized by a compound of formula wherein Z is O, Se or S; Z<SP>1</SP> is Se, S, -CH = CH-, NR 4 or C(R 5 )R 6 wherein R 4 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aralkyl or aryl and R 5 and R 6 are substituted or unsubstituted; Y and Y<SP>1</SP> are -(Q 1 )C = C(Q 2 )-, -N = C(Q 1 )-, or -CH 2 -CH 2 - wherein Q 1 and Q 2 are H, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or amino, halogen or the atoms to form a fused ring; R 3 is H, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, alkylthio; R 1 and R 2 are alkyl, aralkyl or aryl, or allyl, at least one of R 1 and R 2 being sulphatoalkyl, phosphonoalkyl, an -A<SP>1</SP>-COO-B<SP>1</SP>-SO 2 OH group, an -A-W-NH-VB group, an -A-W-N-V-B group, an -A<SP>11</SP>-PO(O<SP>-</SP>)OR 8 group or an -A<SP>11</SP>-PO- (OR 7 )OR 8 group, wherein A<SP>1</SP> and B<SP>1</SP> are alkylene or tolylene, W and V are CO, SO 2 or a single bond, at least one of W and V being SO 2 , A is alkylene and B is H, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or amino, with the proviso that B is not H when V is CO or SO 2 , R 7 and R 8 are alkyl and A<SP>11</SP> is alkylene; X- is an anion but is not present if R 1 or R 2 contains an anionic group and n is 1 or 2. The sensitizing dye may be added to a dispersion of ZnO in an aqueous or organic medium which may or may not already contain a binder. The binder may be polyvinyl acetate mixed with copolyvinyl chloride-vinyl acetate-maleic anhydride or copolymaleic anhydride - N vinyl pyrrolidone mixed with copolyvinyl acetate-crotonic acid and a melamine-formaldehyde resin. The composition may be coated on glassine or baryta paper to form an electro-photographic plate. Additives to the composition may be acid butyl phosphate and tetrachlorophthalic anhydride. In the specific embodiments the substituents are, X- is I- or Br-; Z is O, S, Se; Z<SP>1</SP> is S, Se, NC 2 H 5 or -CH = CH-; R 1 and R 2 are CH 3 , C 2 H 5 , CH 2 CON-SO 2 CH 3 , (CH 2 ) 3 - OSO 3 -, (CH 2 ) 3 OSO 3 H, (CH 2 ) n CO 2 H, CH 2 CONHSO 3 CH 3 , (CH 2 SO s N-COCH 3 , (CH 2 ) n SO 2 - NHCOCH 3 [n = 3 or 4], (CH 2 ) 3 OSO 3 N<SP>+</SP>H- (C 2 H 5 ) 3 , (CH 2 ) 2 PO(C 2 H 5 ) 2 , (CH 2 ) 4 PO(O<SP>-</SP>)OH or (CH 2 ) 3 PO(O<SP>-</SP>) 2 N<SP>+</SP>H(C 2 H 5 ) 3 ; R 3 is H, CH 3 or C 2 H 5 ; Y and Y<SP>1</SP> are -CH 2 -CH 2 - or -C(CH 3 ) = N- and Q 1 + Q 2 make up a benzene or naphthalene ring which may be substituted by a methyl, phenyl, methoxy, or carboxyethyl group or by two methyl or methoxy groups. Many other substituents are also specified.
