[Also in Division C4] 2 - Hydroxy - 3 - nitro - pyridine - 5 - carboxylie acid is obtained by nitrating 2 - hydroxy - pyridine - 5 - carbonyl acid with a nitric acid sulphuric acid mixture first at 20-25‹ C. and then 75‹ C. The mass is cooled, poured into ice, stirred, filtered under vacuum wash with ice water and dried, m.p. 274-276‹ C. The product is then reacted with a mixture of phosphorus oxychloride and phosphorus pentachloride with heating under reflux. The reaction mixture is fractionally distilled to give a fraction at 170- 175‹ C. a mobile pale yellow liquid which is 2 - chloro - 3 - nitro - 5 - chloroformylpyridine.
