abstract 1,200,231. Polymerization of ethylene sulphide. ETHYLENE-PLASTIQUE S.A. 27 Nov., 1968 [14 Dec., 1967], No. 56849/67. Heading C3R. Ethylene sulphide (or mixtures thereof with homologues in which the hydrogen atoms are substituted by hydrocarbon radicals) is polymerized in a medium comprising dimethyl sulphoxide. The medium may be dimethyl sulphoxide alone or mixtures thereof with other aprotic solvents which may yield homogeneous or heterogeneous media, e.g. aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons, cyclic or non-cyclic ethers, N,N- dialkyl amides or nitriles; in the case of mixtures dimethyl sulphoxide may comprise at least 10% by volume of the polymerization medium. An anionic polymerization catalyst may be used, e.g. tetraphenyl phosphonium oleate, N,N-dimethyldodecylamine or tributylamine. The polymers have low stability which may be improved by addition of a stabilizer.
