titleOfInvention Separation of Acrylic Acid and Acrolein or Methacrylic Acid and Methacrolein.
abstract 1,199,432. Separation of unsaturated carboxylic acids and aldehydes. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 14 Aug., 1967 [15 Aug., 1966], No. 37208/67. Heading C2C. Acrylic acid and acrolein, and in a modification methacrylic acid and methacrolein, in a gaseous mixture with an inert gas are separated by water-scrubbing at an elevated temperature between the boiling point of the aldehyde and acid, and gas stripping the aqueous solution of the acid. The aldehyde is removed as a gas and further scrubbed in a second scrubber to separate and recover the aldehyde using water or organic solvents as the scrubbing fluid. The first scrubbing stage is preferably at pressure and the gas stripping may be by heating, injection of steam or other inert gas in the base section of the scrubber or alternatively by using a separate still. An example describes the separation and recovery of acrylic acid and acrolein obtained by the oxidation of propylene. Polymerization inhibitors are preferably added to the mixtures.
