[Also in Division C5] The invention comprises 1,7-diaminonaphthalene-5-sulphonic acid (I) which is prepared by nitrating 1 - nitronaphthalene - 5 - sulphonic acid in oleum to give 1,7-dinitronaphthalene-5-sulphonic acid which is then reduced. Compound (I) may be treated in a Bucherer reaction to yield 1-hydroxy-7-aminonaphthalene - 7 - sulphonic acid (II). Compounds (I) and (II) are specified as lubricant additives (see Division C5).
