abstract 1,197,594. Air drying polyester-polyether compositions. ANCHOR CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 15 Aug., 1968 [31 Aug., 1967], No. 39895/67. Headings C3B and C3R. An air drying surface coating composition comprises (1) an unsaturated polyester, (2) a polyether obtained by polymerizing a glycidyl ether of a #-unsaturated alcohol of at least 3 carbon atoms or a mixture thereof with another oxirane compound and (3) a small quantity of a metal salt of an organic acid. The composition may also include (4) an inhibitor which is an oxime of acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde or methyl ethyl ketone (5) a solvent, e.g. xylene or a mixture of methyl isobutyl ketone and methyl isobutyl carbinol or (6) diisopropylamine. Exemplified polyesters are those derived from (a) maleic anhydride, phthalic acid, propylene glycol and, possibly, ethylene glycol; (b) but - 2 - yne - 1:4 - diol, ethylene glycol, succinic acid and phthalic anhydride and (c) methyl endo-bicyclo-(2:2:1)-hept-5-ene-2:3-dicarboxylic acid anhydride, phthalic anhydride, ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. Specified polyethers are those obtained by polymerizing the glycidyl ethers of allyl, methallyl, prop-2- ynyl, cinnamyl and crotyl alcohol and but-2-yne- 1:4-diol and mixtures of such glycidyl ethers and ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, cyclohexene oxide, epichlorohydrin, 1-chloro-3:4- epoxybutane, methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butyl-, 2-ethylhexyl- and phenyl-glycidyl ethers, the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A, 1:6-hexylene diglycidyl ether and glycerol triglycidyl ether. Specified metal salts are the cobalt, lead, copper and zinc salts of naphthenic acid and 2-ethylhexoic acid.
