titleOfInvention | Coloured Polycarbonates and Process for Preparing the Same |
abstract | 1,195,708. Colouring polycarbonate resins. MOBAY CHEMICAL CO. 17 July, 1967 [19 July, 1966], No. 32727/67. Heading C3R. Coloured polycarbonates are made by feeding a pigment or dye and pellets of a polycarbonate resin into a screw extruder which has a feed zone temperature of 260-350‹ C., an extrusion zone temperature of 160-250‹ C., a temperature gradient of 80-120‹ C., and a screw of a uniform flight depth whereby a low shear is exerted on the polycarbonate resin and a high shear on the pigment or dye. The extruder may have a length to diameter ratio of from 10 : 1 to 30: 1. Prior to being fed to the extruder, the pigment or dye and the polycarbonate resin may be preblended (e.g. in an extruder, ribbon mixer, tumbling barrel mixer, double cone mixer, V-cone mixer or mushroom mixer). The preblending may be such as to produce a homogeneous mixture or a pigment or dye coated with the polycarbonate resin. Also the preblending may produce a master batch containing a large quantity of pigment or dye which is then fed to the extruder with additional polycarbonate resin. Many pigments or dyes are mentioned but those used in the examples were (4), (10) and (11) titanium dioxide; (5) a mixture of titanium dioxide, heliogen blue, diluted black and solvent violet; (6) scarlet red; (7) a mixture of croton fast green toner, titanium dioxide and amaplast yellow; (8) and (9) a mixture of thermas blue-black, marine blue, titanium dioxide and cadmium red; (12) a mixture of ultramarine violet and ultramarine blue. The polycarbonates used were those derived by reacting bisphenol-A, phosgene and p -tert. -butylphenol. |
