[Also in Division C3] Halogen-containing ethers for the production of fire-resistant polyurethanes (see Division C3) and which have the general formula in which A is a single bond or a divalent radical of the formula -CH 2 -, X is halogen, hydrogen or an alkyl radical and Y<SP>1</SP> is halogen, hydrogen, alkyl or -O(RO) n H, at least one of X and Y<SP>1</SP> being halogen, R is alkylene or -CHClCH 2 - and n is greater than 1, are prepared by reacting an alkylene oxide, epichlorhydrin or tetrahydrofuran or a mixture thereof with a compound of the formula in which A and X are as above and Y is H, halogen, alkyl or OH, in an organic solvent in the presence of a catalyst at 80‹ to 200‹ C. under a pressure of 1 to 10 atmospheres. Specified phenols are 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxy-3,5,3<SP>1</SP>,5<SP>1</SP>- tetrachloro - diphenyl dimethyl - methane and -ethane, and 4,4<SP>1</SP>,5,5<SP>1 </SP>- tetrahydroxy - 3,31 - dichloro diphenyl dimethyl methane. Compounds are prepared in which the number of mols of alkylene oxide does not exceed 6 per hydroxy group. |
