titleOfInvention Brominated Siloxanes and their preparation
abstract 1,194,407. Brominated siloxanes. BERK Ltd. 1 Oct., 1968 [18 Oct., 1967], No. 47454/67. Heading C3S. The invention comprises brominated siloxanes of formula where R is an alkyl group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms and x is 0, 1 or 2. The compounds are prepared by oxidizing compounds of formula R x (Br 5 C 6 O) 3-x SiCl. In an example silicon tetrachloride is reacted with pentabromophenol to obtain chlorotris-(pentabromophenoxy)-silane and this is oxidized with mercuric oxide to obtain hexa-(pentabromophenoxy) disiloxane. The compounds of the invention may be added to synthetic polymers as fire retardants, the effect being enhanced by also adding arsenic oxide or sulphide, antimony oxide or sulphide or an organic antimonate.
