Heading C2C. #-Lactones are prepared in a multi-step process, the first step comprising extracting an aqueous solution which contains a salt of a #-halogen monocarboxylic acid, which salt in the said aqueous solution undergoes reaction to form a #-lactone, with a liquid comprising or consisting of a water-immiscible organic solvent for the #-lactone until between 75 and 95% wt. of the salt of the halogen acid has been converted, separating an aqueous and an organic layer, and in one or more subsequent steps extracting the aqueous layer with a liquid comprising or consisting of a water-immiscible organic solvent for the #-lactone, this liquid in at least one step being fresh water-immiscible solvent, and separating an aqueous and an organic layer after each extraction, and if desired isolating the #-lactone from one or more of the organic layers. The example describes the preparation of pivalolactone. Specification 1,070,238 is referred to. |
