titleOfInvention | Aryl-Substituted Aliphatic Secondary Amines |
abstract | 1,190,646. Amines. ARMOUR & CO. 10 Oct., 1967 [11 Oct., 1966], No. 46290/67. Heading C2C. The invention relates to secondary amines of the formula in which x, x<SP>1</SP>, y and y<SP>1</SP> denote integers from 0 to 19, the totals of x and y and of x<SP>1</SP> and y<SP>1</SP> being 8 to 19, R denotes (1) a phenyl group which may be substituted by 1 or 2 methyl, hydroxy or methoxy groups or (2) a naphthyl group, and R<SP>1</SP> has the same significance as R or denotes a hydrogen atom. The compounds are prepared by known methods, preferably by arylating an unsaturated fatty acid, converting the arylated product into the nitrile and hydrogenating the nitrile. Thus, oleic acid may be arylated with benzene by a Friedel- Crafts reaction using acid activated clay as the catalyst, the phenylstearic acid so obtained may be converted into the nitrile by passage over a bauxite catalyst and the nitrile may be hydrogenated with the aid of a copper chromite catalyst, to yield di-(phenyloctadecyl) amine. Other products similarly obtainable include di-(hydroxyphenyloctadecyl) amine, di-(tolyloctadecyl) amine, di-(phenylundecyl) amine and di-(xylyloctadecyl) amine. The products may be converted into salts, e.g. of hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric, perchloric, formic and acetic acids. |
