titleOfInvention Olefin Copolymers
abstract 1,190,599. Olefin copolymers. MONTECATINI EDISON S.p.A. 27 Nov., 1967 [30 Nov., 1966], No. 53767/67. Heading C3P. A copolymer of 3 and/or 4 mono- or dialkylbicyclo - (4,2,1) mono - 3,7 - diene, ethylene and a higher alpha olefin, is prepared by polymerizing the monomers in the presence of a catalyst obtained from a vanadium compound and an organo aluminium compound or hydride, at least one halogen atom being contained within one of the catalytic components. Suitable dienes are 3-methyl-bicyclo- (4,2,1) nona-3,7-diene and 3,4-dimethyl-bicyclo - (4,2,1) - nona - 3,7 - diene. The vanadium catalyst component may be obtained from a hydrocarbon soluble vanadium compound such as a halide or oxyhalide or a compound in which at least one of the valencies of the metal is saturated by a hetero-atom (such as oxygen or nitrogen) bound to an organic group; alternatively, this component may be hydrocarbon insoluble and may be vanadyl chloride, vanadium tri-, acetate, benzoate or stearate. The polymerization may be carried out at- 10‹ to - 50‹ C., or 0‹ to 125‹ C. in the presence of a complexing agent such as an ether, thioether, tertiary amine or tri-substituted phosphine containing at least one branched alkyl group or an aromatic nucleus. The complexing agent is present in from 0À05 to 1 mol. per mol. of aluminium alkylhalide. The polymerization may be conducted in the presence of liquid monomer and in the absence of solvent, or in the presence of an inert hydrocarbon solvent. In the examples, 3,4-dimethyl- or 3-methylbicyclo - (4,2,1) - nona - 3,7 - diene, ethylene and propylene are co-polymerized in solution or in bulk using a catalyst preformed from vanadium tetrachloride and aluminium ethyl sesquichloride or vanadyl chloride and aluminium diethyl chloride, the polymerization reaction being terminated by adding phenylbeta naphthylamine in methanol, followed by purification with hydrochloric acid and water, and coagulation with acetone. The copolymer is mixed with carbon black and vulcanized.
