titleOfInvention | Process for preparing a Mixture of Aromatic Sulfones and Aromatic Sulfonyl Chlorides |
abstract | 1,190,433. Aromatic sulphones and sulphonyl chlorides or bromides. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 9 June, 1967 [10 June, 1966], No. 26786/67. Heading C2C. An aromatic compound of the formula in which X denotes a hydrogen, chlorine, bromine or fluorine atom or a methyl group, is treated with sulphur trioxide and at least a stoichiometric proportion of thionyl chloride or bromide, based on the sulphur trioxide. Mixtures of aromatic sulphones and sulphonyl chlorides or bromides, free from aromatic sulphonic acids and their anhydrides, are so obtained. The reaction may be effected at a temperature up to 130‹ C. and may be catalysed by addition of sulphur mono- and (or) di-chloride. A solvent may be present, preferably an excess of the aromatic compound starting material. The products may be converted into unitary sulphones by treating them with a further proportion of the aromatic compound starting material to convert the sulphonyl chloride or bromide component of the product. This may be effected by catalytic treatment with ferric chloride, aluminium chloride, antimony trichloride or stannic chloride. |
