Novel 19-nor steroids of the formula (wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are each C 1-7 alkyl; X is C 2-7 alkenyl or alkynyl; and Y and Z are each H or C 1-7 alkanoyl) are prepared by reduction of the corresponding 3-ones e.g. with a metallic hydride. In the products a 17-α-alkynyl group may be hydrogenated to a 17α-alkenyl group; and free 3- or 3- and 17-hydroxy groups may be acylated. The products may exist as d- or l-enantiomers or mixtures thereof, and racemates may be resolved by standard procedures. The starting materials are described and claimed in Specification 1,169,938.
