Polyamides are manufactured by polymerizing a monoamino-monocarboxylic acid having at least 2 carbon atoms between the amino and carbonyl groups, a lactam thereof or substantially equimolar proportions of a diamine containing at least 2 carbon atoms between the amino groups and a dicarboxylic acid containing at least 2 carbon atoms between the carboxyl groups in the presence of 0À1 to 10 mole per cent of a salt of an organic diamine and a phosphonic acid of formula where R<SP>1</SP> is organic and n is 1 to 3 and 0À1 to 5À0 mole per cent of a sulphonamide of formula ArSO 2 NHR where Ar is phenyl, tolyl or naphthyl and R is a C 1-12 . Either diamine may be hexamethylene diamine and the acid may be adipic acid. The phosphonic acid may be phenyl phosphonic acid or cyclohexyl phosphonic acid and the sulphonamide may be N- methyl benzene sulphonamide, N-ethyl ptoluene sulphonamide, N-tert-butyl-naphthalene - 2 - sulphonamide, N - n - dodecyl benzene sulphonamide and N-u-butyl-p-toluene sulphonamide.
