abstract 1,187,671. 4,5,6,7-Tetrafluorobenzo (b) thiophen and derivatives thereof. IMPERIAL SMELTING CORP. (N.S.C.) Ltd. 27 Feb., 1968 [26 Jan., 1967], No. 3973/67. Heading C2C. The invention comprises compounds of the general formula wherein both the groups Y are identical and Y is -COOR, -COOH or -H, and R is a hydrocarbon group, and the monohydrate of the compound wherein Y is -COOH. The compounds wherein R is -COOR are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula with a diester of acetylene dicarboxylic acid at an initial temperature below 0‹ C. Hydrolysis of the esters with 50% H 2 SO 4 gives the compound in which Y is -COOH, which compound is isolated as its monohydrate. Decarboxylation of this monohydrate using copper powder in quinoline gives the compound in which Y is H. Pentafluorothiophenol is prepared by treating pentafluorobenzene with n-butyl-lithium and adding flowers of sulphur to the resulting mixture.
