abstract 1,183,184. Reinforced poly (alkyl methacrylate) tiles. MONSANTO CO. 3 Jan., 1967 [3 Jan., 1966], No. 376/67. Heading C3P. Tiles for application to architectural surfaces are composed of a composition comprising (a) from 10-95% by volume (based on the total composition) of a water-insoluble inorganic material having a Mohs hardness of at least 4; (b) from 90-5% by volume of an alkyl methacrylate polymer; and (c) a coupling agent (i.e. a difunctional compound containing at least one hydrolysable functional group capable of reaction with the surface of an inorganic material and at least one functional group capable of chemical combination with an alkyl methacrylate polymer), the tiles having a thickness of 1/32 to <SP>1</SP>/ 4 inch and length and width each up to 8 feet. Suitable examples of cornponents (a) and (c) are as previously described in Specifications 1,140,542 and 1,111,603. In examples, the tiles are prepared by polymerizing methyl methacrylate, with and without lauryl methacrylate, in the presence of a mullite/wollastonite mixture (component a) treated with 3-trimethoxysilyl propyl methacrylate (component c) and in the presence of a saturated or unsaturated synthetic rubber, the polymerization being initiated with cumene hydroperoxide and being effected at 90‹ C. in a mould having thickness 1/4 inch. The tiles are of particular use in the production of terrazzo-like floor coverings but are also suitable for walls, ceilings, room dividers, doors &c. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,111,603 and 1,140,542.
