titleOfInvention Method of Preparing of Chloryl Fluoride
abstract 1,182,535. Chloryl fluoride. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 1 April, 1968 [18 April, 1967], No. 15554/68. Heading C1A. Chloryl fluoride, ClO2F, is prepared by the reaction of chlorine monoxide Cl2O with silver difluoride AgF2, at a temperature of 50‹ to 75‹ C. The Cl2O is preferably prepared by the action of Cl2 on mercuric oxide, and is circulated over powdered AgF2. The reactions taking place are believed to be (1) 4Cl2O#2ClO2+3Cl2 (2) ClO2+AgF2#ClO2+AgF. The Cl2 which is formed as a by-product, may be reacted with mercuric oxide to form Cl2O and the silver monofluoride by-product may be re-converted into AgF2 by the action of ClF3. A suitable vacuum-line apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
