titleOfInvention A process for the production of Polymers of Cyclopentene
abstract 1,181,958. Cyclopentene polymers. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 29 Jan., 1969 [24 Feb., 1968], No. 4828/69. Heading C3P. Polymers of cyclopentene are prepared by the solution polymerization of cyclopentene, optionally with an additional monomer, in the presence of a mixed catalyst which is prepared by adding tungsten hexachloride to the polymerization solution at above 0‹ C., before or after the addition of cyclopentene-2-hydroperoxide, and then after the colour has changed from blue or greenish-blue to red-brown an aluminium trialkyl or aluminium alkylhalide is added at - 30‹ to +30‹ C., and the polymer is isolated from the solution. The additional monomer may be a diolefin having a molecular weight of 93-132. A preferred copolymer is prepared from cyclopentene and dicyclo pentadiene and this copolymer, compared with a polypentenomer, has the following I.R. bands: 3030 cm.<SP>-1</SP>, 1440 cm.<SP>-1</SP>, 1358 cm.<SP>-1</SP>, 1280 cm.<SP>-1</SP> and 730 cm.<SP>-1</SP>. In the examples, cyclopentene is polymerized using tungsten hexachloride, cyclopentene-2- hydroperoxide and aluminium tri-isobutyl, the reaction being terminated by the addition of a methanol-aminoethanol mixture, precipitation of the polymer being effected with a methanol solution containing 3,3<SP>1</SP>-dimethyl-5,5<SP>1</SP>-di-tert.- butyl - 6,6<SP>1</SP> - dihydroxydiphenylmethane. The polymer has a high trans content. Further examples illustrate the copolymerization of cyclopentene with dicyclopentadiene, norbornylene, norbornadiene, cyclo-octadiene and bicyclo-2-octene. The polymers contain a high proportion of trans-bonds.
