titleOfInvention | Deposition of Metals |
abstract | 1,181,912. Coating with metals. MOBIL OIL CORP. April 17, 1968 [June 20, 1967], No.18187/68. Heading C7F. A metal is deposited on a substrate of colloidal dimension (10 to 10,000 Angstrom) having a surface of a metal which is higher in the electromotive series than the metal which is to be deposited using a non-aqueous anhydrous solution of a compound of the metal. The solvent may be benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, propyl benzene, trimethylbenzene, cymene, cycloalkanes, pyricline, furan, picolenes, akyl formamides, alkyl sulphones and sulphoxides, alkyl halides, ethylene or propylene carbonate or liquid sulphur dioxide, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide or phosgene. Acetic acid or its anhydride, phosphorodithioric acid, alkyl and aryl sulphonic acids, and ethylendiamine may be added to the solution. In examples:- (1) Ag is deposited on colloidal Cu from silver perchlorate and benzene (2) Pt on colloidal carbon black which is first coated with Cu using palladium chloride and copper sulphate solutions, (3) as in (2) using colloidal graphite, (4) Pt on aluminia coated with Cu, (5) Pt on Zn using platinum tetrachloride, and (6) Pb on Zn using lead diisopropylphosporodithioate. The core of the particles may be of refractory oxides, carbon black, graphite, glass, cellulose or natural or synthetic resins. The solution may contain more than one metal to give an alloy deposit e.g. Pt-Pd, Ag-Pd, Sn-Ag, Sn-Zn or Ag-Pt-Pd. Other metals which are specifically refined to as being deposited are:- Ti, Zr, Mo, W, Ge, Hf, V, Rh, Ru, Os or Ir. When the particles to be coated comprise a material coated with an electroless metal, the material may be first sensitized with stannous chloride or with a vaporous agent e.g. hydrazine. |
