titleOfInvention Introduction of samples to combustion analysis apparatus
abstract 1,180,668. Combustion analysis. PERKIN-ELMER CORP. 16 May, 1967 [20 June, 1966], No. 22721/67. Heading B1X. In a method of combustion analysis, a liquid sample is introduced into the combustion chamber 44 within a sealed holder 16 which may be of soft glass and is protected by a gas-permeable heat-resistant explosion barrier 32, made for example of platinum mesh. Barrier 32 restrains scattering of the particles of the holder when the holder explodes in the combustion chamber. The holder and the explosion barrier may be carried in quartz ladle 36, which may include a body of magnetic material by means of which the ladle can be moved into the hot zone 48 of the combustion chamber. The explosion barrier material may have catalytic activity. In carrying out an analysis, the sample is burned in oxygen from source 54 and the resulting gases are swept to thermal conductivity cell 82 for measuring water content, through water trap 84, to carbon dioxide measuring cell 86, through carbon dioxide trap 88 and through nitrogen measuring cell 90.
