abstract | 1,179,914. Etching. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 20 April, 1967, No. 18302/67. Heading B6J. Metal plates of zinc, zinc-base alloy, magnesium or magnesium-base alloy having an acidresistant partial coating are etched by imping- ing upon their surfaces an emulsified etching bath containing (1) hydrochloric acid in an amount of or corresponding to from 1-25% by volume of 37À5 weight per cent HC1. (2) from 1-10% by volume of an organic, waterimmiscible liquid of which at least 65% by volume is an aromatic hydrocarbon, a predominantly aromatic derivative of an aromatic hydrocarbon or mixture thereof and which liquid is substantially stable in the presence of hydrochloric acid in the bath at 10-50‹C., (3) from 0À1-5% by weight of one or more sulphonated or sulphated surface active agents having a solubility of at least 0À01% by weight in each of water and the organic water-immiscible liquid, and a solubility of at least 0À1% in at least one of water and the organic waterimmiscible liquid, and (4) water. The aromatic hydrocarbon or derivative may be a diethyl benzene, a tetramethyl benzene, a diisopropyl benzene, a dodecyl benzene, monochloroethyl benzene, diamyl benzene or an aliphatic naphthenic. The balance, if any of the organic water-immiscible liquid (2) is a non-aromatic, water-immiscible organic solvent, e.g. hexyl acetate, trichloroethylene, ethyl butyl ketone, methylhexyl ketone, isophorone, d-limonene, or turpentine. The bath may also contain 0À33-2% by volume of 42‹ BaumÚ nitric acid. |
