titleOfInvention Glass-Reinforced Copolymers of Trioxane and process for makingthem
abstract 1,178,344. Polymerizing trioxan in the presence of glass fibres. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 8 April, 1968 [8 April, 1967], No. 16734/68. , Heading C3P. Oxymethylene copolymers reinforced with glass-fibres are obtained by copolymerizing at - 50‹ to + 110‹ C. in the presence of a cationic catalyst, 30 to 94-9% by weight of trioxan and 0À1 to 20% by weight of a cyclic ether or cyclic acetal in admixture with 5 to 50% by weight of glass fibres impregnated with an epoxidegroup containing silane or siloxane. In the examples, there is described the bulk polymerization of trioxan with ethylene oxide, diethylene glycol formal, or 1,4-butane diol formal in the presence of BF 3 .(C 4 H 9 ) 2 0 and glass fibres of specified thicknesses (9 or 6 microns) and specified average length (0-2 or 0-3 millimetre) treated with trimethoxy-[3-(2,3- epoxypropyloxy) - propyl] - silane, pentamethyl - (3,4 - epoxybutyl) disiloxane, heptamethyl - [3 - (2,3 - epoxypropyloxy) propyl]- trisiloxane and methyl - tris - -.[3 - (2,3 - epoxypropyloxy) - propyl] - silane. In a comparative example, a preformed trioxanethylene oxide copolymer was mixed with the impregnated glass fibres.
