Heading C2U. #<SP>5</SP>(<SP>10</SP>) - 3 - Keto - 19 - nor - steroids are prepared by reacting #<SP>4</SP>-3,19-dioxo-steroids with a base in liquid ammonia, followed by decomposing the reaction mixture by treating with a compound which acts as a strong acid in an ammoniacal medium. If the starting material is a #<SP>4</SP>-3,17,19-trioxo-androstene compound and the base is an alkali metal acetylide then the product is a #<SP>5(10)</SP> - 3 - keto - 17# - hydroxy-17α- ethynyl-estrene compound. |
