titleOfInvention | New Dialdehyde-Ketone Polycondensates |
abstract | 1,176,264. Polymers from aldehydes and ketones. RHONE-POULENC S.A. 26 April, 1968, No. 19944/68. Headings C3R and C3P. The invention comprises polymers containing both units of formula and of formula where R is m-phenylene, p-phenylene or p-diphenylene and may be substituted by halogen, n is 0 or 1, R<SP>2</SP> is a radical of formula where M is a transition metal and R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are hydrogen or aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radicals or, when n is 0, are linked to form a polymethylene chain. The polymers are obtained by reacting a dialdehyde of formula with a ketone of formula in the presence of a base in solution in immiscible solvents by interfacial polycondensation, the solvents being such that no one solvent dissolves all three of the dialdehyde, ketone and base. The polymers may be cured by heating alone at above 100 or by heating with compounds having ethylenic double bonds, in the latter case compounds generating free radicals may be present. In examples polymers are prepared from acetone, terephthaldehyde and caustic soda using water and benzene as solvents, and are reacted with divinyl adipate, with divinylbenzene and with 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl- 1,3,5,7 - tetravinylcyclotetrasiloxane, in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile and dicumyl peroxide; and a polymer is prepared by reacting terephthaldehyde, 1,1-diacetylferrocene and sodium hydroxide using water and benzene as solvents. Other dialdehydes, ketones, bases and ethylenic compounds are mentioned. |
