titleOfInvention | Process for the Preparation of Hydroxybenzonitriles |
abstract | 1,176,239. Hydroxybenzonitriles. MAY & BAKER Ltd. 1 May, 1968 [5 May, 1967; 25 Aug., 1967], Nos. 21145/67 and 39302/67. Heading C2C. The invention comprises a method of making hydroxybenzonitriles of the formula in which Y and Z denote hydrogen or halogen atoms, or alkali-metal salts thereof. The method comprises the dealkylation of an alkoxybenzonitrile of the formula in which R denotes an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms, by reaction with a phenol derivative of the formula in which M denotes a hydrogen or alkali-metal atom and X denotes a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms. Phenol ethers, e.g. anisole, may be obtained as by-products. Examples are given, the specified products including 4-hydroxybenzonitrile, 4- hydroxy - 3,5 - dibromobenzonitrile, 3 - chloro- and 3 - iodo - 4 - hydroxybenzonitriles and 2- and 3-hydroxybenzonitriles. |
