titleOfInvention | A Fermentation process using Gaseous Hydrocarbons |
abstract | 1,175,813. Cultivating micro-organisms on gaseous hydrocarbons. KYOWA HAKKO KOGYO CO. Ltd. May 30, 1968 [June 2, 1967], No.26017/68. Heading C6F. In cultivating a hydrocarbon-assimilating microorganism in an aqueous nutrient medium under aerobic conditions in the presence of a gaseous mixture comprising a hydrocarbon gas as the main carbon source and oxygen gas, the volume ratio of oxygen gas to hydrocarbon gas supplied to the culture medium for aeration is so controlled that the amount of oxygen gas is equal to or is less than the amount of the hydrocarbon gas, preferably between 10:90 and 50:50. Hydrocarbon gas: methane, ethane, propane, n-butane, iso-butane, thylene, propylene and butylene. Undissolved gaseous hydrocarbon is recirculated through the fermentation medium. Carbon dioxide in the recirculating gas is absorbed with aqueous alkali. At the beginning of the culturing the upper part of the culturing apparatus contains nitrogen, this is replaced by air and hydrocarbon gas is supplied until the concentration approaches the upper limiting range of combustion, when oxygen is gradually introduced. At the completion of the culturing the supply of oxygen is discontinued, the remaining hydrocarbon gas is replaced by nitrogen and then air is admitted. |
