titleOfInvention A Process for Treatment of a Hydrocarbon Fermentation Liquor
abstract 1,175,783. L-Glutamic acid and orotic acid by fermentation. KYOWA HAKKO KOGYO CO Ltd. 12 July, 1968 [8 Aug., 1967], No. 33350/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C6] Carbon source hydrocarbon and accumulated fermentation products are recovered, at the completion of fermentation, from a fermentation liquor obtained by culturing a hydrocarbonassimilating micro-organism under aerobic conditions in an aqueous nutrient medium containing at least one hydrocarbon (specified) as the main carbon source, by adding a mineral acid (sulphuric, hydrochloric or nitric acids) to the fermentation liquor, a concentrate of the fermentation liquor or a mixture of the hydrocarbon and the micro-organism, to provide a pH of 1À0 or less, heating the mixture to at least 80‹ C., e.g. between 80‹ and 200‹ C., for at least one hour and then filtering, thereby recovering the hydrocarbon from the filtrate and purifying the liquor. According to an example, to 50 litres of the fermentation liquor obtained by culturing the 1-glutamic acid-producing strain Arthrobacter paraffineus ATCC 21167 under aerobic conditions in an aqueous nutrient medium containing n-paraffin as the main carbon source, there is added 4À35 Kg. of 35% hydrochloric acid to provide a pH of 1À0. The liquor is then heated with stirring at 100‹ C. for 5 hours and filtered and the filtrate cooled while in a stationary position. The n-paraffin is recovered from the upper phase, 1-glutamic acid from the aqueous phase. A further example relates to the treatment of a fermentation liquor obtained by culturing the orotic acid-producing strain Arthrobacter hydrocarboglutamicus ATCC 21190.
