titleOfInvention | Platinum Catalyzed Silicon-Containing Compositions. |
abstract | 1,175,224. Platinum - catalysed preparation of silicon compounds and compositions. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 3 March, 1967, No. 10185/67. Headings C3S and C3T. Silicon compounds containing at least one H atom per molecule bound to silicon, and not more than 2 H atoms on any one Si atom, are caused to add to compounds containing aliphatic carbon atoms linked by multiple bonds by heating the mixture in the presence of trimethylplatinum iodide or hexamethyldiplatinum as catalyst. The mixture containing the catalyst is stable at room temperature. Suitable hydrosilicon compounds include silanes R 2 Si HbX 4-a-b , cyclic siloxanes [RHSiO] c and other polysiloxanes of average formula R d SiH e O 4-d-e , 2 wherein R is monovalent hydrocarbon, halohydrocarbon or cyanoalkyl radical, X is -OR or -OOCR, a is 0, 1, 2 or 3, b is 1 or 2, and a+b is 1 to 4, c is at least 3, d is 0À5 to 2À49, e is 0À001 to 1À0 and d+e is 1À0 to 2À5. Particularly useful unsaturated compounds are those silicon compounds listed above in which the Si-bound H atoms are replaced by unsaturated radicals. In Examples: (1), (2) tetrahydrotetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane is added to tetravinyltetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane i.p.o. Me 3 PtI or Me 6 Pt 2 ; (3) [MeHSiO] 4 is added to a polysiloxane containing 0À2% MeViSiO, 2% Ph 2 SiO and 97À8% Me 2 SiO i.p.o. Me 6 Pt 2 and fume silica; (4) HSiCl 3 is added to hexene-1 i.p.o. Me 3 PtI; and (5) a polysiloxane Me 2 HSiO [Me 2 SiO] 98 SiMe 2 H is added to ViMe 2 SiOSiMe 2 Vi i.p.o. Me 6 Pt 2 . Products which are silicone elastomers or resins may also contain fillers, colourants, extenders and antioxidants; suitable conventional fillers are listed and may amount to 20-300 p.p.h.r. |
