The invention comprises compounds of the general formulµ wherein R is H, C 1-4 alkyl, C 2-4 alkenyl, C 2 _ 4 alkynyl or C 2-4 haloalkynyl, R<SP>1</SP> is C 1-6 alkyl and R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>111</SP> are each H or C 1-12 carboxylic acyl. Compounds of Formula I are prepared by reducing the corresponding 1,3,5(10),15-tetraenes with alkali metal/liquid ammonia, or, for products wherein R is other than H, by the action of RLi or RMgX (X = halo) on a compound of Formula V. Compounds of Formula II are prepared treating a compound of Formula I with mild acid. Compounds of Formula III are prepared by treating a compound of Formula I with a strong acid, or a compound of Formula II with a strong base or strong acid, and, when required, esterifying the resulting 17#-ol of Formula III. Compounds of Formula IV are prepared by metal hydride reduction of a compound of Formula III, and, when required, esterification of the obtained 3#-hydroxy compound. Compounds of Formula V are obtained by oxidation of a compound of Formula I wherein R is H. The compounds of Formula I are stated to possess progestational. estrogenic and myotrophic properties. 3 - Methoxy - 17α - methyl - estra - 1,3,5(10),15- tetraen - 17# - ol, 3 - methoxy - 17α - (n - butyl)- estra - 1,3,5(10),15 - tetraen - 17# - ol, and 3- methoxy - estra - 1,3,5(10),15 - tetraen - 17# - ol are all prepared from 3-methoxy-estra-1,3,5(10), 15-tetraen-17-one. |
