titleOfInvention Production of Sulphonated Olefins
abstract 1,174,529. Sulphonated olefins. COLGATEPALMOLIVE CO. 18 March, 1968 [22 March, 1967], No. 12928/68. Heading C2C. Sulphonated olefins are prepared by extracting an acid mix, produced by reacting sulphur trioxide with an olefin of 8 to 30 carbon atoms, with aqueous sulphuric acid to produce a mixture comprising a liquid aqueous sulphuric acid phase and an organic phase containing the major proportion of the acid mix, and separating the sulphuric acid phase (which may be recycled) from the organic phase. The organic phase can be hydrolysed under acidic or alkaline conditions to produce a mixture containing alkenyl sulphonates and hydroxyalkane sulphonates. The compounds may be bleached with an oxidizing agent after the extraction.
