Substantially sulphuric acid-free naphthalene disulphonic acid is produced by passing a mixture of naphthalene disulphonic acid and sulphuric acid, obtained by reacting naphthalene and concentrated sulphuric acid, through an evaporation zone as a thin, wiped film having a thickness of from 0À5 to 3À0 mms. to separate, by evaporation, the sulphuric acid from the naphthalene disulphonic acid. The mixture of naphthalene disulphonic acid and sulphuric acid may be formed in the evaporation zone by passing thereinto a mixture of concentrated sulphuric acid and naphthalene, which may have been preheated to a temperature of at least 100‹ C. Alternatively naphthalene and concentrated sulphuric acid may be pre-reacted at 15-40‹ C. for 1-20 hours and thereafter passed into the evaporation zone. |
