titleOfInvention Polyamide Tape and Power Transmission Belting
abstract 1,170,638. Polyamide tape. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 23 May, 1967 [23 May, 1966; 19 Dec., 1966], No. 23833/67. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions C3 and F2] A polyamide tape has a composition comprising 80 to 100% by weight of a copolymer of 70 to 92% by weight of hexamethylene adipamide units or units derived from caprolactam with 8 to 30% by weight, complementally to total 100% of said copolymer, of at least one different unit selected from hexamethylene adipamide, units derived from caprolactam, or hexamethylene sebacamide; and 0 to 20% by weight, based on the weight of said composition, of a plasticizer for said copolymer, with the proviso that the percentage by weight of said plasticizer plus the 8 to 30% units of the copolymer totals at least 15% of the weight of said composition, and the tape has a deformation ratio by roll orientation of at least 2 and a total deformation ratio of at least 3. Preferably, the copolymer is a copolymer of 75 to 85% by weight of hexamethylene adipamide and complementary to total 100% of said copolymer, 15 to 25% by weight of units derived from caprolactam. Specified plasticizers include N- ethyl toluene sulfonamide, 2-ethylhexanediol- 1,3, and tetramethylenesulfone. The deformation ratio, which is a measure of the roll orientation, is defined as the weight per unit length before orientation divided by the weight per unit (same) length after orientation. The total deformation ratio, where roll orientation is followed by stretching, is defined as the product of deformation ratio by rolling times deformation ratio by stretching. Preferably, the total deformation ratio is from 3À9 to 4À5. Tape may be rolled to obtain a deformation ratio by roll orientation of from 2À4 to 3À5 and then stretched to obtain the remainder of said total deformation ratio. Alternatively, the total deformation ratio may be obtained by roll orientation. Tapes so made may show tensile strengths of at least 2800 kg./sq. cm., preferably at least 3500 kg./sq. cm., and are suitable for lamination to a wear surface material to make a power transmission belting. The tapes are obtained by orientation of ribbon-shaped polyamide billets having the above-described composition. The billets can be made by extrusion or by the moulding process of Specification 1,170,640. Orientation of the billet is carried out by passing it between at least one pair of orienting rollers as disclosed in Specification 1,017,175. This orientation is called roll-orientation. In another embodiment, roll-orientation of the billet can be combined with subsequent stretching to produce tapes having the above-described strengths and dimensions.
