titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to means for Feeding Specimens into Evacuated Chambers |
abstract | 1,170,535. Determining gas content of copper. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 April, 1968 [19 April, 1967], No. 17984/67. Heading B1X. [Also in Divisions B8, Fl and F4] Apparatus for feeding specimens into a vacuum chamber, e.g. copper cubes into an induction-heated graphite crucible 11 in a furnace tube 7, Fig. 1, for measuring the gas content of the copper, comprises a piston 47 with a recess 51 for receiving the specimen, the piston being movable in a cylinder 45 from the position shown in which a specimen is placed in recess 51 through port 53 after removal of plug 55, to a second position in which a groove 75 in piston rod 57 connects the right-hand end of cylinder 45 and recess 51 to a rough vacuum through passage 63, and then to a third position, at the left-hand end of cylinder 45, in which, on rotation of the piston through 180‹, recess 51 communicates with a port 81, through which the specimen drops to a storage and feeding apparatus in the form of a screw 83, Fig. 2, or a rotating disc 95, Fig. 3. Screw 83 is mounted in a glass tube 31 within a stainless steel tube 32, and is rotated by a knob 89 to feed the specimens from part 81 to a guide tube 33 leading to the crucible. Disc 95 is rotated by a knob 99 acting through driving pins 101 and a notched dial 102, rotation of knob 99 through 180‹ aligning one of a series of specimen-receiving apertures 94 with port 81 and another aperture 94 with guide tube 33. The notches in dial 102 are numbered to indicate the position of disc 95. A crucible plug 43 is connected to an iron slug 39 movable by a magnet. A viewing window 35 is provided at the upper end of passage 33. |
