titleOfInvention A Process for Producing Olefinic Terpolymers
abstract 1,170,406. Olefine terpolymers. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 28 June, 1968 [1 July, 1967], No. 30920/68. Heading C3P. Linear, amorphous, solid terpolymers of ethylene, propylene and 5-ethylidene-2-norbomene are prepared by contacting the monomers in the presence of hydrogen with a catalyst which is obtained by contacting (1) AlR n X 3-n wherein R is a hydrocarbon radical, X is a halogen atom and n is from 1 to 2, with (2) a vanadium (III to V) compound. The norbomene may be added continuously or intermittently such that the iodine number of the terpolymer is maintained at a constant value. Lists of suitable catalyst components are given, and the catalyst may be prepared by contacting an organo-aluminium dihalide with a sulphonic acid halide and adding thereto a vanadium compound. The preferred polymerization conditions are a temperature of - 10‹ to + 50‹ C., a pressure of 100 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> or below, and using an amount of hydrogen which is 0À01-50 mol per cent based on the total amount of ethylene and propylene present. A third catalyst component may be present, and such materials comprise organic compounds containing phosphorous, nitrogen, oxygen or sulphur, halides or halogens, sulphur or sulphides, and compounds of phosphorous, arsenic, antimony and bismuth. In the examples, the monomers are polymerized in the presence of H 2 , and in heptane or o-dichlorobenzene, using a catalyst comprising (1) ethyl aluminium sesquichloride and vanadyltrichloride or vanadium tetrachloride, (2) diethyl aluminium chloride and triethyl orthovanadate and (3) diethyl aluminium chloride, dichloro vanadyl monoacetylacetonate and benzene sulphonyl chloride. The polymerization is terminated by the addition of methanol and cresol. The polymer product can be cured. A preferred telomer comprises 10-70 mol per cent propylene, and 0À5-10 mol pre cent of 5- ethylidene-2-norbomene, and has an intrinsic viscosity (in xylene at 70‹ C.) of 0À5-5 dl/g.
