titleOfInvention Foamable Copolymers
abstract 1,170,010. Foamable cross-linkable copolymers. ROHM & HAAS G.m.b.H. 15 Nov., 1967 [15 Nov., 1966], No. 52073/67. Addition to 1,045,229. Headings C3C and C3P. Resins which are capable of foaming when heated are prepared by copolymerizing (A) 20-60% by wt. of a nitrile and/or amide of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid (B), 10-60% of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid and optionally (C) not more than 60% of at least one further copolymerizable monomer, in the presence of 3-20% of urea or N,N<SP>1</SP>-dimethyl-urea and in the presence of a cross-linking agent which either cross-links the copolymer during its preparation or during heating of the copolymer at above 180‹ C. to produce a foam and which contains at least two reactive groups per molecule which are vinyl, vinylidene, amidomethylol, amido-methylol-ether, carbamidomethylol, carbamido-methylol-ether, epoxy or larger groups which contain these groups, e.g. allyl or acrylate. Component (C) may be methyl or butyl methacrylate or styrene. The cross-linking agent may be ethylene glycol dimethacrylate butanediol-1,4-dimethacrylate, divinyl benzene, triallyl cyanurate, allyl acrylate, diallyl ether or phthalate, a carbamide resin precondensate, a urea/melamine/guanidine or N,N<SP>1</SP> - ethylene / urea / formaldehyde condensate, an epoxy resin, glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate (methoxy- or butoxy-) methylacrylamide. In examples the monomers were polymerized using (1) azoisobutyronitrile and (2) and (3) polyvinyl butyral and dibenzoyl peroxide; and the copolymers were foamed by heating.
